The movement was started by Hershel “Woody” Williams, a Marine Corps veteran in World War II and Medal of Honor recipient who later had a 33-year career with the Department of Veterans Affairs. Since 2013, there have been 34 monuments installed and 43 more are planned.The black granite memorial in San Jose shares a design with the project’s other monuments. His office, along with the Santa Clara County board of supervisors and private sponsors, provided funding for the monument. Oak Hill provided a permanent site near its front entrance on Curtner Avenue.
